The Insulin Plant is an attractive tropical ornamental plant known for its lush green, spiral-arranged leaves and distinctive red, cone-shaped flowers. It is commonly grown in Indian gardens and homes for its unusual foliage and bright red flower bracts. The name “Insulin Plant” is mainly associated with Costus igneus, a related Costus species traditionally used in India because its leaves have been consumed with the belief that they may help lower blood sugar.

There is some scientific research suggesting that Costus igneus may have blood-glucose-lowering effects, particularly in laboratory and animal studies, but this should not be considered a proven treatment or cure for diabetes.
