Crassula ovata, or the jade plant, is a succulent plant native to South Africa. The jade plant is an extremely popular houseplant, but it also has many other uses. It can be used in landscaping and as a hedge plant, and its ability to thrive in low-light environments makes it ideal for growing indoors. It can also be used in greenhouses and hydroponic systems. Crassula ovata is not actually related to true jade at all—it belongs to a genus of plants called Crassula that contains about 200 accepted species. The most common of these are known as the “jade” plants; they are popular houseplants because they do well in low light conditions.
