The Giant Calotrope (Calotropis gigantea) is a hardy, drought-tolerant shrub commonly found across India in dry and arid regions. Recognized for its large, waxy , gray-green leaves and striking purple or white star-shaped flowers, this plant is often seen growing wild along roadsides, wastelands, and temple grounds.
This plant holds significant cultural and medicinal value in India. It is considered sacred in Hinduism and is often used in prayers dedicated to Lord Shiva. In Ayurveda, its latex (milky sap) and leaves are traditionally used for treating skin diseases, joint pain, and respiratory issues. Despite its medicinal properties, it is mildly toxic if ingested and should be handled with care.
The Crown Flower is also an excellent choice for xeriscaping (low-water gardens) due to its ability to thrive in poor soils with minimal care. Its flowers attract butterflies and bees, making it beneficial for pollinator gardens.
