The peepal tree, also known as the sacred fig, is a species of Ficus religiosa that is native to South Asia. It is a large tree that can reach a height of 130 feet, with an average height of 60-70 feet. The leaves are compound, with three leaflets per leaf. The trunk and branches are dark green, but the undersides are white, which gives it a distinct appearance from all other trees in its region. The flowers are orange-red and appear in clusters on the end branches before the leaves emerge. The peepal tree is sacred to Hindus because it grows near temples and shrines; its fruits are considered sacred food for pilgrims and worshippers who perform puja (worship). It is also called the Bodhi tree because it was under this tree that Buddha achieved enlightenment
