The Duranta is a shrub or small tree in the verbena family, Verbenaceae. Its name comes from an old Portuguese word meaning “to bind.” The plant has been cultivated for centuries as an ornamental plant and as a hedge to keep out animals and insects that may damage crops. The Duranta is native to South America, southern Mexico, and tropical Africa. In fact, it was first brought to Europe from Asia by missionaries who found it growing in the mission fields of South America. In the past century, it has become one of the most popular ornamental plants in the United States.
Good outdoor plant at low cost.
